Chamber
Awarded Inaugural Siemens Sustainable Community Award
Aaron Nelson and Anne McKune attend National Conference
on Corporate Community Investment to accept national award
on behalf of the Chamber and its Foundation for a Sustainable
Community
The
Chapel Hill-Carrboro
Chamber of Commerce, Albuquerque,
NM, and Kingsport,
TN were honored last week as the first recipients of the
Siemens
Sustainable Community Awards. The Awards recognize outstanding
local public-private efforts to build and grow sustainably.
The winning communities were announced during a reception
at the Business
Civic Leadership Center’s National Conference on
Corporate Community Investment in Anaheim, CA. BCLC
is an affiliate of the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce.
Led
by the question of what sustainability really means and what
it looks like, BCLC
and Siemens
came together to establish the Sustainable Community Awards.
In the Mid-Size Community category, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro
Chamber of Commerce accepted the award for creating the Foundation
for a Sustainable Community, which invests in business
and community resources to promote and advance environmental
stewardship, social equity, and economic prosperity.
"Our
three winning communities stand out as successful models for
engaging the local business, civic, and government sectors
in managing 21st century challenges, such as energy efficiency
and sustainable development," said BCLC
Executive Director, Stephen Jordan.

OWASA
Resumes Annual Mowing and Clearing of Sewer Easements
OWASA is resuming annual inspections, mowing, trimming and
other clearing in public sewer easements.
Most of OWASA’s easements are 30 feet wide, but usually
about 20 feet of the easement width is cleared (about 10 feet
on each side of a sewer main). For full story, click

Water
Conservation Update from OWASA: Stage One water use restrictions
are in effect
After
last week's rain, our reservoirs are now 79% full, up from
72% Friday, April 25. The Cane Creek Reservoir, our primary
water source, has risen 22 inches since Friday, April 25 and
is about 5 feet below full.
On Sunday, April 27 and Monday, April 28, rainfall at the
Cane Creek Reservoir totaled 2.1 inches. About 1.4 inches
was recorded at our Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant
in Carrboro.
Water demand in the last 30 days averaged 6.5 million gallons
per day and continues to be well below the current water conservation
objective of 7.8 million gallons per day.
Under worst case conditions of no further rainfall or water
flow in the creeks and streams that drain to our lakes, and
assuming water use of 7 to 9 million gallons per day, the
2.825 billion gallons in storage represent 8 to 10 months
of supply. For full story, click
